And what is means to me.
I feel as though we all have a bit of feminism inside us, and this day means something a little different to everyone.
For me, it acknowledging all the amazing women in my life and their accomplishments despite the odds of being stereotyped for having to do this or having to do that. I'll be honest, I've always been a traditionalist, I loved the idea of being a wife, a mom, and if God let me do that full-time and have financial stability, what a blessing.
However, my senior of high school, I began to grow in a way that "expanded my pallet" some would say. I knew what I loved, who I loved and how I wanted to live out my life. I started becoming extremely inspired and empowered by the other boss ladies I knew creating their own destiny. I still believe in everything happens for a reason, and that reason is often times a lesson of growth. But that doesn't mean that every young girl, young women, or any other female should be raised without the ideology of you can do anything.
I realized that no one was stopping me from having both, I could be an awesome mom one day with a career, and brand and supportive people all around. You just have to make that decision for you and no one else.
I got my first taste of the "I can do anything I set my mind to" when I heard a talk in Flower Girls about self-image. That sparked my interest in self-help and self-love. Learning to have confidence in yourself is one of the hardest things to do. But since that talk, I have expanded, explored and believed in ways to be more confident, self-assured, and overall happy.
This day also means a lot to me and my sisters of Gamma Phi Beta. A huge reason for choosing the house I did during recruitment was because of their philanthropic mission, "Building Strong Girls". We help raise money for Girls on the Run, an after-school program that teaches girls lessons about bullying, self- confidence and being career driven all while training to run a 5K. Every semester we go volunteer at the event, and I always choose run buddy (running the 5K alongside your "buddy" for the day). I have met some of the most inspiring, strong, (fast) and incredible young girls because of Gamma Phi and Girls on the run.
During recruitment on philanthropy day, we all had stories about why we thought we were strong, on this day I looked around at what is now my pink home and knew that this mission was something that truly meant a lot to me. I was surrounded by young women, finding themselves, their home and why they are strong too.
So Happy International Women's Day! I hope you took the day to acknowledge the incredible things you've done and the incredible women in your life!
